At Georgia Tech, research and innovation are at the heart of everything we do. Our 10 interdisciplinary research institutes, the Georgia Tech Research Institute, Enterprise Innovation Institute, six colleges, and hundreds of labs and centers push the boundaries of science and technology every day. This year, Georgia Tech attracted more than $1 billion in research funding to help address critical challenges in computing, engineering, design, sciences, humanities, liberal arts, business, and other areas. Along with continued growth in research expenditures, the scientific discoveries happening across campus are plentiful.
In this report, a few research highlights showcase some of our most exciting innovations over the past year. We hope you enjoy this look into the state of research at Georgia Tech, as we fulfill our commitment to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition.
A Message From Chaouki Abdallah
As an engine of innovation in science and technology, Georgia Tech is committed to conducting research that matters – curiosity- and mission-driven research that serves the public good, with the goal of addressing humanity’s greatest challenges.
Our research enterprise also affords Georgia Tech students unparalleled opportunities to learn, innovate, and discover where their interests lie. They will become the next generation of scientists, engineers, business owners, and policymakers – the leaders who will transform tomorrow.
Georgia Tech’s research engine powers an innovation ecosystem that fuels innovation and attracts more than $100 million in industry research each year. The Enterprise Innovation Institute is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive university-based program of business and industry assistance, technology commercialization, and economic development. The ecosystem at Georgia Tech offers world-class commercialization services for faculty, staff, and students to catalyze research and innovation that matter, and that improves the human condition.
Georgia Tech is focused on understanding climate change and the long-term behavior of global climate systems, as well as their impact on human and environmental health. At the intersection of scientific disciplines and engineering principles, we work to address emerging environmental issues — from sustaining our air, water, and land resources to public health and environmental restoration.
At Georgia Tech, researchers combine clinical insights, biological approaches, and advanced engineering technologies to address unmet clinical challenges and accelerate the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments. Cancer research, medical device innovation, pediatric therapeutics, and immunoengineering are just a few of the areas we’re exploring.
At Georgia Tech, we recognize the vital diversity of perspectives in a culturally and technologically complex society. This includes research that is focused on public policy, economics, and the arts. With an interdisciplinary approach, our researchers look to make a positive impact on the most challenging human issues of our time.
Georgia Tech’s mission is to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Our mission and strategic plan are focused on making a positive impact in the lives of people everywhere. This spans across multiple, transdisciplinary fields, including AI, robotics, neuroscience, hypersonics, advanced manufacturing, quantum computing, and more.
Each year, our research enterprise grows substantially. And this year was no different. Georgia Tech consistently ranks among the top U.S. institutions of higher education in the volume of research conducted, with more than $1 billion in sponsored expenditures annually.
Georgia Tech is also in the top 20 in higher education research and development spending for the first time in a decade at $1.049 billion, according to the National Science Foundation.
